Helen Kennemer
Class of 2006

Helen Kennemer
Helen Kenner was a long time coach at West Limestone High School.

During the 1970's, Kennemer was everything that West Limestone's girls' athletics stood for. Unlike today?s coaches who specialize in one sport, Kennemer was involved in almost every girl?s sport that was offered at West Limestone.

Kennemer helped bring the girls' athletic programs to newfound success in the 70's, and sustained success in every sport her girls competed in.

In 1974, Kennemer led the Wildcats to an A-2A Volleyball Championship when they eliminated reigning champ Lexington. Kennemer also led her junior varsity volleyball team to a Limestone County championship in 1974.

Kennemer helped West Limestone continue its volleyball success in 1975 when the Wildcats won the first Valley Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament by defeating Tanner 15-8. Kennemer also coached the West Limestone junior varsity softball team when it won the county championship in 1975.

In 1976 Kennemer had what could possibly be the best year in her coaching career when the West Limestone girls took the first annual Girls Sports Conference Basketball Tournament, Athens State College's Invitational Softball Championship, Limestone County?s Volleyball Championship and the second annual GSC -A-2A Volleyball Championship.

This coach was known for more than just her coaching success. The Kennemers were also known for pioneering organized athletic play in Alabama. It is partially due to James and Helen that West Limestone was one of the first schools in Limestone County to compete in organized leagues.

She retired in 1983.
