Harry Richter
Class of 2003
The late Harry Richter guided West Limestone to one of the most impressive state basketball championships in Limestone County history.
In 1956, West Limestone won the Class A state basketball championship. They trampled the competition on the way to the fmals, beating T.R. Miller by 25 in the quarterfinals and Curry by 28 in the semifinals. They defeated Hackneyville 69-62 in the fmals. They also beat the defending state champion, Priceville, by 28 on their way to the state playoffs.
Richter once said that "the '56 team was by far the best team I have ever had."
Richter attended Athens High School where he played basketball and football before transferring to the Columbia Military Academy, where he starred in basketball, football and tennis. He played end at CMA and scored 96 ofhis team's 175 points one season.
After completing high school, Richter attended Vanderbilt University on a football scholarship, where he was active in football and basketball.
During his coaching years at West Limestone, Richter produced a consistent winner. West Limestone also won two county championships under his guidance.
